How to choose a smart plug
Four questions, in this order. The first one is worth more thought than the other three combined, because it is the only one you cannot fix later with a different setting.
1. Which ecosystems does it actually join?
Every plug works in its own maker’s app. What varies is whether it shows up in yourhome — the Apple Home app, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings — alongside everything else you own, so it can be in the same routine as a light and a lock. Two designs do that. A Matter-certified plug speaks the cross-brand standard directly, so all four ecosystems can carry it. A brand-nativeplug, like the HomeKit-enabled Kasa EP25, gets there through the manufacturer’s own integrations instead. Both work. Matter is the one that ages better, because it is a published standard rather than a company’s goodwill, and it keeps working on your local network when the internet drops. The practical version: buy the plug that fits the ecosystem you already live in, and if you are not sure yet, buy Matter and keep your options open. A four-pack of plugs is exactly the wrong thing to be locked into.
2. Does it meter what it is switching?
Energy monitoring turns a plug from a switch into an instrument. Once a plug reports watts, you can stop guessing which appliance is expensive and go and look — and that is usually more valuable than the switching. TP-Link publishes real-time and historical consumption for both the Tapo P110M and the Kasa EP25; the Kasa outdoor EP40M and the Wyze Plug do not list it. Set expectations properly though: these are convenience meters, not revenue-grade instruments, and no smart plug saves a cent on its own. It only helps if it changes what you switch off. 3. What are you plugging into it?
This is the boring question that occasionally matters a great deal. The plugs on this page publish a 15A ceiling — 1800W resistive for the Tapo P110M and the Kasa EP25, 1875W for the outdoor EP40M — along with a separate, much lower rating for motors. A lamp, a fan, a TV, a coffee maker, a Christmas tree: all comfortably fine. Anything that heats or has a compressor in it deserves a check against both the plug’s published rating and the appliance’s own label before you commit, and space heaters in particular are worth a second look, since they draw near the top of that range continuously rather than in bursts.
4. Indoor, outdoor, and the shape of the thing
An indoor plug outside is not a small mistake, which is why the outdoor pick below is a separate class of product with an IP64 rating and a published temperature range rather than a normal plug in a box. The other physical detail worth a moment is width. Older smart plugs were fat enough to cover both sockets of a duplex outlet, which quietly halves what you can plug in. TP-Link publishes 66 x 38 x 40mm for the P110M and 66.5 x 38 x 40mm for the EP25 — both slim enough to stack two in one outlet, which is precisely why they come in four-packs.

Read down the columns and the ranking explains itself. The Tapo P110M is first because it is the only indoor plug here that is both Matter-certified and metered, and it arrives in a four-pack, which is the quantity people actually end up wanting. The Kasa EP25 is the pick for a household that runs on Apple Home and would rather have a HomeKit accessory than a Matter one — same metering, same slim body, a longer track record in that ecosystem. The EP40M is on the list because nothing else here may go outside. And the Wyze Plug is last for a specific, honest reason.
Why the Wyze Plug is fourth
It is a perfectly good switch. It just does less than the others: Wyze publishes Alexa, Google Assistant and IFTTT support, and lists neither Apple Home, nor Matter, nor energy monitoring. If your cameras and your app are already Wyze, keeping one app is a real benefit and this is the plug to buy. If they are not, the plugs above do more, and they are not in a different price class — check the live prices in the table at the top of this page before you decide, because in this category the ranking by price changes week to week and we would rather you looked than took our word for it.
That is also the reason you will not find a no-name multipack on this page. The bargain plugs sitting under the brands here are usually cloud-only, tied to an app of unknown provenance, and the thing you are giving a permanent connection to your network and your electrical outlet is the last place to save four dollars. CISA’s consumer guidance on smart-home devices makes the same point in more formal language: the account and the firmware behind a cheap device are part of what you are buying. Ours is a plainer version — buy from someone who will still be shipping firmware in three years.
Where plugs fit in a wider setup
Smart plugs are the best first purchase in a smart home, and they are also the one category where it is easy to overbuy. Two or four is a sensible start: the lamp you always forget, the coffee maker, the fan, the tree in December. Beyond that you start hitting things a plug cannot do — it switches power on and off, so it cannot dim a bulb, and any appliance with a soft-power button will not resume when the power comes back. That is the point at which a proper smart bulb or a different device class is the answer instead.
The other half of the picture is running cost, which for plugs is refreshingly dull: no subscription, and a standby draw small enough that it only matters if you fit a plug to something that already used almost nothing.
