Editorial policy

Circuit & Chime exists to give people honest, useful buying advice for the smart, secure home. This policy is the set of rules we follow to keep it that way. It sits alongside two companion pages: the how we test page, which describes our method in detail, and the affiliate disclosure, which explains how the site is funded.

Independence

We are editorially independent of every brand we cover. No manufacturer or retailer can pay to appear on the site, to rank higher, to be called a “best” pick, or to have a negative point softened. We accept no free products, review units, loaners or gifts, and we run no sponsored posts. The site is funded by affiliate commissions, and those commissions never influence a recommendation — the reasoning behind a pick is the same whether the link earns us anything or not.

Sourcing and accuracy

Every factual claim is traceable to a source. Product specifications are read from the manufacturer’s documentation and the retailer listing on a dated visit, and each product card links back to the source it was read from. When a claim leans on more than a spec sheet — energy savings, crime data, device-security guidance, an interoperability standard — we cite the relevant standards body or government agency, and those citations appear in a Sources section on the page. Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, we print “Not published” rather than guess.

No fabrication

We do not invent anything. That means no fabricated reviews, testimonials or quotes; no invented star ratings or benchmark numbers; and no “we tested it” claims for products we haven’t. Because we do not operate a hands-on test lab, our on-page verdicts are presented as informed editorial opinion grounded in published facts — never as the output of testing we didn’t do. Prices are pulled live from the retailer and dated; we never print a price from memory.

How we choose and rank products

Roundups rank products on their published capability weighed against the total cost of ownership — upfront price plus any recurring fees over the life of the product. Because avoiding an unnecessary subscription is this site’s central theme, a product that does its core job for free will usually rank above a pricier one that locks the same function behind a plan, unless the paid option is clearly better for the buyer. We recommend the product we’d actually buy for that job, and we’re explicit about who a product isn’t for. A more expensive link never earns a higher ranking.

Authorship

Circuit & Chime is written by Stephen V., an enthusiast who researches this category closely — not a licensed installer, electrician or security professional, and we never imply otherwise. Corrections

We will get things wrong — a spec changes, a price source shifts, a brand updates a policy. When we learn of a factual error, we fix it, and for anything substantive we note that a correction was made. If you spot something — an out-of-date spec, a price that looks off, a recommendation you think misses something — please tell us through the contact page, which reaches us directly at info@circuitandchime.com. Reader corrections are one of the best ways this site stays accurate, and if you’re right, we’ll change it.

Updates to this policy

As the site grows and adds new kinds of content, we may refine these standards. Material changes will be reflected here. The principles behind them — independence, sourced accuracy, no fabrication, and honest disclosure — are not up for negotiation.
