Frequently asked questions

What is the best smart lock for Airbnb?

For most hosts, the Yale Assure Lock 2 with the Wi-Fi module. Yale publishes an official Airbnb integration for it — a unique code is generated for each reservation and set to expire at checkout — and the lock has a keypad on the door, built-in Wi-Fi for remote management and Auto-Lock with DoorSense, with no subscription. If you want the most robust hardware, the Schlage Encode Plus publishes an ANSI/BHMA Grade AAA rating, up to 100 scheduled codes and 'Works with the Airbnb app.' If the deadbolt cannot be changed, the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock plus an August keypad is the retrofit route.

How does the Airbnb smart lock integration work?

Yale and August describe it the same way: you pair the lock account with your Airbnb host account, and when a guest books, a unique door code is generated automatically and delivered to the guest through Airbnb. The code is active only for the stay and expires at checkout; hosts can adjust for early check-in or late checkout from the Airbnb app. Both brands say the integration is available for locks operating in the U.S. and Canada, and Yale notes that only the primary host can pair the accounts.

Do Airbnb guests need an app to use a smart lock?

No, and they should not have to. Guests receive a code and use the keypad. August states that guests are required to access with a keypad and automatically receive their code on their reservation in the Airbnb app; Yale's integration works the same way. This is why a lock without a keypad — or one that relies on a phone app or a fingerprint — is the wrong tool for a rental.

How long do smart lock batteries last in a rental?

Schlage is the only maker here that publishes a figure: up to six months of typical use on four AA batteries for the Encode Plus. Yale and August list AA batteries without a duration on their product pages. Wi-Fi is what drains a lock fastest, which is why both Yale and August sell hosting bundles with a bridge and describe extended battery life as the reason. Plan on a battery change each season and add it to the cleaner's checklist.

Can I use a smart lock in a rental property I don't own?

Usually, with a retrofit lock. The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock replaces only the interior thumb-turn, so the exterior deadbolt and the landlord's keys keep working — nothing visible changes from outside. Add the August keypad if you want codes. A full deadbolt replacement like the Yale or Schlage needs the owner's permission, since it swaps the exterior hardware. Keep the original deadbolt in a drawer either way.

Is a fingerprint lock good for Airbnb?

No. A fingerprint reader has to be taught each user's finger in person, which is the opposite of what a rental needs — a code that can be issued remotely to someone you have never met and revoked when they leave. Fingerprint locks such as the Wyze Lock Bolt are good for a home where the same few people come and go; for a rental, use a keypad lock with reservation-generated codes.

Do these locks need a subscription?

No. Yale, Schlage and August all include app control, codes and remote access in the purchase price for the models here, and the Airbnb integration is part of the free feature set. That is one of the few areas of smart-home security where the running cost is genuinely zero.
