Frequently asked questions

Do smart locks need a subscription?

No. The locks in this roundup — Yale, August, Schlage, Wyze and Level — don't charge a monthly fee to lock, unlock, set codes or use the app. Recurring fees in this category come from video doorbells that store recordings in the cloud, not from the locks themselves.

Can renters use a smart lock?

Yes. A retrofit lock like the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock installs over the inside of your existing deadbolt, so your keys and the exterior of the door don't change and there's nothing permanent to undo when you move. Full-replacement deadbolts like the Yale and Schlage swap the whole lock, which is better suited to homeowners.

What happens to a smart lock if the Wi-Fi or power goes out?

You can still get in. Keypad codes and a Bluetooth connection from a phone at the door work locally without the internet, and the lock runs on its own batteries, so a power cut doesn't lock you out. What you lose during an outage is remote control and notifications until the connection is back.

Which smart locks work with Apple Home Key?

Among our picks, the Schlage Encode Plus and the Level Lock+ support Apple Home Key, letting you tap an iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock. The August also works with Apple Home, while the Yale Assure Lock 2 (Wi-Fi) and Wyze Lock Bolt in this list work with Alexa and Google Home rather than Apple.
