How to choose a home security camera

Start with the subscription question, because it’s the biggest hidden cost. If you want zero recurring fees, buy a camera that records to a microSD card (Wyze, Tapo, Reolink) or a local base station (eufy). If you don’t mind a plan and you’re already in the Alexa world, Ring and Blink are convenient — just add the monthly cost to your mental price.

Then match the power source to the spot

An indoor camera or one under an eave can be plain wired — simplest, no charging. A camera on a fence or a far corner of the yard wants battery or, better, solar so you’re not up a ladder every few weeks. If the location gets a few hours of sun, a solar camera like the eufyCam or a Reolink Argus is effectively set-and-forget.

Don’t overspend on resolution

2K is plenty for most homes; 4K helps only if you need to zoom in on faces or plates at distance. Color night vision matters more than raw resolution for actually identifying someone after dark.
