How to choose a smart bulb
Five questions. The first two decide what you buy; the last three decide whether you are happy with it a year from now.
1. Bridge bulb, or Wi-Fi bulb?
This is the fork in the road. A Wi-Fi bulb joins your router directly: open the app, pair it, done, nothing else to buy. A bridge bulbtalks over a low-power mesh — Zigbee, in the case of Philips Hue — to a small box plugged into your router, and only the box touches your Wi-Fi.
For two or three bulbs, Wi-Fi wins on cost and simplicity and there is nothing more to say. The difference shows up at the eighth or tenth bulb. Every Wi-Fi bulb is another device competing for the same router; a mesh bulb is not, which is why a Hue system stays snappy when a room full of Wi-Fi bulbs starts responding in its own time. The trade is money and a box: the bridge is another thing to power, and Hue bulbs cost more than the Wi-Fi bulbs below. Buy a bridge if you can see yourself lighting a whole house. 2. “No hub required” and “Matter” are two different claims
Three of the four picks here are Wi-Fi bulbs that say “no hub required,” and that is true — for setting the bulb up in its own app. It is only half the story if you want that bulb to live in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings alongside everything else you own.
A Matter-certifiedbulb speaks the cross-brand standard, so any of those four platforms can adopt it rather than leaving it stranded in the maker’s app. But adding a Matter device to a platform requires that platform’s Matter controllerto already be in the house: a HomePod or Apple TV for Apple Home, a Nest speaker or display for Google Home, a recent Echo for Alexa, a SmartThings hub for SmartThings. Most people who want smart bulbs already own one of those and never notice the requirement. The practical rule is the same one we apply everywhere on this site: when two bulbs are close in price and one carries Matter, buy the Matter one. It costs nothing today and it is the difference between a bulb you can take with you to a different ecosystem and a bulb you cannot.
3. Color, tunable white, or just dimmable?
Full color photographs well and gets used twice a year. What people actually live with is tunable white— the ability to move the same bulb from a warm 2200K in the evening to a cold, alert 6500K at a desk in the morning. Every pick on this page does both, because at these prices color bulbs have stopped costing meaningfully more than white ones, and buying a color bulb keeps the option open.
The one number worth reading is how far a bulb dims. Philips publishes dimming to 2% for the Hue Essential bulbs and TP-Link publishes a floor of 20 lumens for the Kasa KL135 — both mean a bulb you can actually use late at night, rather than one whose “lowest” setting is still a lighthouse. If a brand does not publish a dimming floor at all, assume it is not a selling point for them.
4. Brightness is lumens, not watts
Wattage stopped meaning brightness when LEDs arrived. ENERGY STAR’s LED explainer puts the efficiency gap at up to 90% — an incandescent bulb releases around 90% of its energy as heat rather than light — so the 60W habit is now just a translation. The number to compare is lumens, and the makers here translate it for you consistently: 800 lm is the 60W-equivalent output on both the Hue Essential and the Sengled, and TP-Link’s 1100 lm Tapo L535E is the 75W equivalent.
One consequence worth knowing: LED bulbs mostly do not fail the way filament bulbs did. ENERGY STAR describes LED lifetime as the point where light output has dropped by 30%, not the moment the bulb dies, which is why makers quote figures like Philips’ 25,000 hours and 50,000 switch cycles for the Hue Essential rather than a hard expiry. In practice you will change your mind about your lighting long before the hardware gives up.
5. The wall switch is the real problem
Here is the failure that sends smart bulbs back to the store. A smart bulb needs constant power to listen for you. Cut it at the wall and the bulb is a normal bulb that is now off and unreachable — and every houseguest in the world reaches for the wall switch. There are three honest answers: leave the switch on and use the app, voice or a small remote; fit a smart switch instead of smart bulbs in rooms where people flip switches; or accept it in lamps, where nobody uses a wall switch anyway. That last one is why a lamp is the perfect first smart bulb.
The related trap is the dimmer switch. TP-Link says plainly not to fit the L535E behind one, and the same warning applies to essentially every smart bulb: the bulb does its own dimming, and a wall dimmer chopping its power supply causes flicker, buzz or an early death. A smart bulb belongs behind a plain on/off switch, permanently left on. Check the fitting too — every pick here is the standard A19 shape on an E26 screw base, which is what a normal US lamp or ceiling fitting takes.

Read across and the ranking falls out of the first two rows. The Hue kit is first because it is the only one that answers the scale question — it puts the bulbs on their own mesh and the bridge on your router, and it arrives with the bridge in the box, so you are not buying half a system. The Tapo four-pack is the value answer for everyone who is not lighting a whole house: Matter-certified, the brightest published output here, and four bulbs for roughly what one premium bulb costs. The Sengled exists on this list for a specific reason — it is sold one at a time, and one is the right number of bulbs to buy when you are not yet sure you want any. And the Kasa is fourth for a reason worth spelling out.
Why the Kasa KL135 is fourth
It is a good bulb from a brand that has been shipping this line for years, and it is usually the cheapest single color bulb here. The problem is the row that says “brand apps only.” TP-Link lists Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for the KL135 and does not publish Apple Home or Matter support — so if your house runs on Apple Home, or you might change your mind about your ecosystem later, this bulb is a dead end that the three above it are not.
If you are firmly in Alexa or Google and you want one cheap bulb for a lamp, buy it and enjoy it; TP-Link publishes a genuinely useful 1000 lm to 20 lm dimming range, which is wider than most bargain bulbs manage. If either of those conditions is shaky, the Sengled costs a little more and keeps every door open, and the Tapo four-pack works out cheaper per bulb than any of the singles — check the live prices in the table at the top of this page before you decide, because in this category the order changes week to week and we would rather you looked than took our word for it.
What you will not find on this page is a no-name multipack. Bulbs are the cheapest possible way to put an unknown vendor’s firmware on your home network, permanently, in every room. CISA’s consumer guidance on smart-home devices makes the point in more formal language; ours is plainer — buy from someone who will still be shipping security updates in three years, because a bulb you cannot patch is a bulb you have to unscrew.
Where bulbs fit in a wider setup
Lighting is the category where a smart home starts to feel like one rather than a collection of gadgets. A plug switches a lamp; a bulb gives you the same lamp at 15% and 2200K at eleven at night, and that is the difference between an automation you tolerate and one you keep. It is also why bulbs and plugs are complements rather than alternatives: put the plug on the coffee maker and the fan, put the bulb where you care what the light looks like. The one thing a plug cannot do is dim, and the one thing a bulb cannot do is run a kettle.
On running cost, lighting is refreshingly dull. There is no subscription on any bulb here, no cloud tier, no per-camera plan — you buy the hardware once and it keeps working, which is exactly the shape of purchase this site exists to point people at.
