Why not just use Wi-Fi?

Zigbee
The widespread, inexpensiveoption. Philips Hue famously runs on Zigbee (via its bridge), as do a huge number of affordable sensors and bulbs. It shares the 2.4GHz band with Wi-Fi, which can mean interference in crowded RF environments, but in practice it’s mature and reliable. If you own Hue, you already run a Zigbee network.
Z-Wave
The reliability-firstoption. Thread

It needs a border router— a job many newer hubs and speakers (some Echo, HomePod and Nest devices) quietly do — to bridge onto your home network. A lot of new products are launching on Thread, so it’s the direction the industry is heading.

This trips people up, so here’s the clean version: Matter is not a radio. It’s a common language — an application layer — for how devices pair and talk, and it runs over Wi-Fi and Thread. So Thread is the transport, and Matter is the shared language on top of it. That pairing is what finally lets a device work across Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home without you caring which app it “belongs” to. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices join the Matter world through a bridge or hub rather than directly.
So how much should you actually care?
For most people, less than you’d think. Three situations where it genuinely matters:
