What's the difference between Zigbee, Z-Wave and Thread?

All three are low-power wireless protocols that let smart-home devices talk without hogging your Wi-Fi, and all three form a mesh where devices relay for each other. Zigbee is widely used and inexpensive (Philips Hue, many sensors); Z-Wave runs on a less-crowded frequency and is known for reliability and range; Thread is the newest, built on modern internet standards and central to Matter. The practical differences are smaller than the marketing suggests.

Do I need to care about Zigbee, Z-Wave or Thread?

Often not much. If you're buying Wi-Fi devices or sticking to one ecosystem, you can largely ignore the radios. They matter when you want a lot of battery-powered sensors (a mesh keeps them efficient), when you want local control that survives an internet outage, or when you're choosing a hub — because the hub decides which radios you can use.

Is Thread replacing Zigbee and Z-Wave?

Not replacing, but it's the direction of travel. Thread is the low-power mesh behind many new Matter devices, and it's designed to interoperate cleanly. Zigbee and Z-Wave have huge installed bases and aren't going away soon, but a lot of new products are launching on Thread and Matter.

How does Matter fit with these radios?

Matter is an application-layer standard for how devices talk and pair, not a radio itself — it runs over Wi-Fi and Thread. So Thread is the low-power transport, and Matter is the common language on top. That combination is what lets a Thread device work across Alexa, Google and Apple Home.
