How to choose a smart home hub

Work through three questions in order and the choice makes itself.

1. Which ecosystem are you in?

This decides almost everything. If your household is on iPhones and you value privacy, Apple Home — and a HomePod mini — is the natural start. If you want the widest device support and the cheapest way in, that’s Alexa, so an Echo device is your hub. If you want one platform that speaks nearly every radio, SmartThings on an Aeotec hub is the middle ground. 2. Which protocols do you need?

A basic Echo Dot or HomePod mini controls Wi-Fi and Matter devices, which covers a lot of starter gear. But the more capable sensors and locks often use Zigbee or Z-Wave, and those need a hub with the right radio on board — the Echo Hub, the Aeotec hub and the Hubitat all include them.
