Frequently asked questions

Is Nest or ecobee better for Apple Home?

ecobee. The ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium has native Apple Home support alongside Alexa and Google Home, plus Siri built in. Nest works with Google Home and Alexa and supports Matter, but native HomeKit has historically been ecobee's advantage — if Apple Home is essential, the ecobee is the safer pick.

Which is easier to install if I don't have a C-wire?

ecobee. It includes a Power Extender Kit (PEK) in the box that lets it run without a dedicated C-wire in many common HVAC setups. Nest doesn't include an adapter, so a home without a C-wire may need extra work. Either way, check your wiring first — our C-wire guide shows how.

Does Nest or ecobee save more money?

Both are ENERGY STAR-style efficient thermostats, and real savings depend far more on your habits and climate than on the brand. Nest's auto-learning builds an efficient schedule for you, which helps if you'd never program one; ecobee's included room sensor helps target the space you actually occupy. The savings gap between them is small next to how you use them.

Do Nest or ecobee thermostats need a subscription?

No. Neither charges a monthly fee for the thermostat or its energy features. ecobee sells optional Smart Security monitoring plans that use its sensors, but they're never required to run the thermostat or save energy.
