Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the Nest Learning Thermostat and the cheaper Nest Thermostat?

The Learning model auto-builds your schedule by watching how you adjust it, has a premium metal build and display, and this 4th-gen bundle includes a remote temperature sensor. The cheaper Nest Thermostat asks you to set a schedule (with energy nudges) and has a lighter build. Both save energy; the Learning model is the fuller, pricier experience.

Does the Nest Learning Thermostat need a C-wire?

Often, yes. Nest thermostats can run without a C-wire in some setups, but a missing C-wire is the most common install snag — and unlike the ecobee, Nest doesn't include a power-extender adapter in the box. Check your wiring before you buy; our C-wire guide shows how.

Does the Nest Learning Thermostat work with Alexa and Apple Home?

It works with Google Home and Alexa, and this generation supports Matter and Thread, which broadens cross-ecosystem control. Native Apple Home support has historically been the ecobee's edge; if Apple Home is essential, confirm current Matter behavior or consider the ecobee.

Does the Nest Learning Thermostat have a subscription?

No. The thermostat and its energy features work with no monthly fee. There's no subscription required to schedule, learn or save energy.
