What does a C-wire do?

The C-wire — 'C' for common — provides a continuous return path for low-voltage power to the thermostat. Old thermostats didn't need constant power, but smart thermostats have Wi-Fi, a display and a processor that run all the time, so many need a C-wire to stay powered without draining or short-cycling your HVAC.

How do I know if I have a C-wire?

Turn off power to your HVAC at the breaker, pull the thermostat off the wall, and look for a wire connected to the terminal labeled C. Don't rely on wire color — go by the terminal label. If C is empty, you may still have a spare unused wire in the wall that can be connected, or you'll need an adapter.

What if my home doesn't have a C-wire?

You have three good options: buy a thermostat that includes a power adapter (the ecobee ships with a Power Extender Kit, for example), add a power-extender or add-a-wire kit that many thermostats provide, or have an HVAC professional run a C-wire.
