Smart thermostats have a wide price range and a narrow performance range. Above a certain point you are buying room sensors, screens and ecosystem breadth, not better temperature control — which makes the cheap end of the market unusually interesting. These two are the cheap end, and they get there by different routes.

Buy the Nest Thermostat unless you have specifically confirmed you have a C-wire and you live entirely in Alexa. It works with Google Home, Alexa and Matter, Google offers a power connector for homes without a C-wire, and it is the more adaptable device in almost every respect. Check the wall before you check the price
This comparison has an unusual property: the correct answer may be decided by wiring you have not looked at. The C-wire — the common wire — is what gives a smart thermostat continuous low-voltage power for its screen, Wi-Fi radio and processor. Older homes frequently do not have one, because a simple mechanical thermostat never needed it.
The Amazon Smart Thermostat requires a C-wire and does not include an adapter. If your wall does not have one, that thermostat is not an option without additional work. The Nest may also want one, but Google sells a power connector accessory to solve it. Nest Thermostat: the adaptable one
The base Nest is the cheapest way into Google’s platform, and the platform is the point. It auto-schedules from your habits rather than making you build a program by hand, which is what most people actually want — the classic failure of programmable thermostats is that nobody programs them. It also nudges you toward more efficient settings, which is a small feature with a compounding effect over a heating season.
Its real advantage over the Amazon unit is reach: Google Home, Alexa and Matter. Matter support in particular means it is not stranded if you change ecosystems later, which is a genuine consideration on a device you will keep for a decade. Amazon Smart Thermostat: the value one
Amazon’s thermostat is the cheapest device here that we would actually recommend, and the reason it is credible rather than merely cheap is that Honeywell built it. Honeywell has been making thermostats for a very long time, and the underlying hardware is unremarkable in the best sense. Amazon supplies the intelligence: Alexa scheduling and Hunches, which adjust based on your routines.
For an Alexa household with the right wiring, this is a lot of thermostat for very little money, and it hits the energy-saving basics that account for most of the benefit — setbacks when the house is empty, a schedule that actually gets followed, and remote control so you are not heating an empty home. The U.S. Department of Energy and ENERGY STAR both point to scheduled setbacks as the main mechanism, and a cheap thermostat that does them is worth more than an expensive one that sits on hold.

What either one will actually save
Worth being careful here, because this category attracts inflated claims. The mechanism by which a smart thermostat saves money is not magic: it stops you heating or cooling an empty house, and it makes the setback schedule something that happens automatically rather than something you have to remember. The U.S. Department of Energy’s guidance on programmable and connected thermostats and the ENERGY STAR program both describe savings in those terms.
Which means the size of your saving depends on your habits before you fitted it. A household that already turned the heating down when leaving will see modest gains. A household with a thermostat permanently on hold at one temperature will see much more. Neither of these devices is better than the other at this — the savings come from the schedule, not the badge. Which should you buy?
Check for a C-wire first. If you do nothave one, the Amazon is out and your choice is the Nest with Google’s power connector or the ecobee with its included adapter. If you do have one, the question becomes ecosystem: Alexa-only households can take the Amazon and save money with no real loss; anyone on Google, anyone mixed, and anyone who wants a Matter escape hatch should take the Nest.
Neither charges a subscription, both hit the energy-saving basics, and both will feel like an upgrade over a dial on the wall.
