An automation is just a rule your home follows: a trigger(the “when”) and an action(the “then”). “When the sun sets, turn on the porch light.” “When the front door unlocks, turn on the entry lamp.” “When everyone leaves, switch off the space heater and set the thermostat back.” String a few actions together and you have a routine or scene— a single trigger that fires a whole sequence, like a “good night” command that dims the lights, locks the door and drops the temperature. The triggers that power a smart home
Automations get interesting because of the variety of things that can act as a trigger:
- Time and sun.A fixed schedule, or “at sunset” / “at sunrise,” which shift with the seasons automatically.

Automations worth setting up first
Don’t try to automate everything at once. A few high-value routines deliver most of the daily benefit:
- Lighting on a schedule— lights that come on at dusk and off at bedtime, so you walk into a lit house and never leave lamps burning.
- A “good night” routine— one command that turns everything off, locks the door, and sets the thermostat back for the night.
- Motion-triggered lights— entryways, hallways and closets that light as you approach and switch off on their own.
- Away automation— when the last phone leaves, shut off the heater or iron on a smart plug and set the thermostat back to save energy.

The gear you need (less than you think)
For the automations above you need surprisingly little: a voice assistant or ecosystem app to hold the rules, and the devicesto act — a couple of smart plugs, some bulbs, maybe a motion sensor and a smart lock.
