Wired vs Wireless Security Cameras: Which Should You Buy?
Nearly every home camera is wireless in the sense that matters least — it uses Wi-Fi. The decision that changes everything is whether it has a power cable, and that one is worth ten minutes of thought before you buy.

Two different meanings of “wireless”
Every camera on this site connects over Wi-Fi. By the first meaning of the word, they are all wireless, and a listing that says so is telling you nothing. The second meaning is the one that matters: does it have a power cable? A plug-in camera has a wire running to an outlet; a battery camera has no wire at all. In home-camera marketing, “wired” almost always means the first of those, not a camera hardwired into the house, and “wire-free” is the honest word for the second.
That one difference — a cable or not — decides five things about how a camera behaves, and none of them is picture quality. This guide walks through each, then points at the camera we would buy for each side of the line. Every spec quoted is from the maker’s own pages, read on the date at the top of this page; we have not tested these cameras and say so on every page of this site.
1. How it records: a stream, or clips
A plug-in camera has power to spare, so it can watch and record constantly. A battery camera cannot, so it sleeps until a motion sensor wakes it, records a clip and goes back to sleep. TP-Link states this as a flat rule in its Tapo documentation: “Battery-powered cameras and doorbells do not support continuous recording.” eufy’s page for the battery eufyCam S330 says the camera “is designed to offer a balance between battery life and event capturing.”
In practice that means a plug-in camera can give you the whole night at the front door on a memory card, while a battery camera gives you the moments its sensor noticed. 2. How it detects: watching pixels, or sensing heat
Because a battery camera is asleep, something else has to notice motion for it. That something is usually a passive infrared sensor — a heat detector — sometimes paired with radar, as eufy publishes for the S330 (“dual motion detection with radar and PIR”) and Reolink publishes for the Argus PT Ultra (“PIR detection”). A plug-in camera is always awake, so it can watch the image itself for change.
The difference shows up in two places. Range: a heat sensor has a stated reach — Reolink publishes up to 33 feet for the Argus PT Ultra — and beyond it the camera does not wake, however good the lens. And glass: heat does not pass through a modern window, so a battery camera behind one is effectively blind. TP-Link is explicit — “glasses will block the motion sensor of the battery camera, making it unable to detect motions” — and Arlo says motion detection “does not work through windows reliably” because most home glass is insulated. If a camera has to sit inside and watch outside, it has to be a plug-in camera; our guide to cameras through windows covers the setup that works.
3. Where it can go
This is the battery camera’s whole argument, and it is a good one. A wire-free camera mounts on a fence post, a tree, a shed, the far corner of a garage — anywhere there is a screw hole and a Wi-Fi signal. Ring publishes a 2.4GHz-only connection for the Outdoor Cam; Arlo publishes 2.4GHz and 5GHz plus a 300-foot line-of-sight range for the Pro 6th Gen; so the signal, not the power, becomes the placement limit. A plug-in camera is tethered to an outlet or a drilled hole with a weatherproof pass-through, which in most houses means under an eave near the door or indoors looking out.
Both of the plug-in cameras we recommend are outdoor-rated — TP-Link publishes IP66 for the Tapo C120, Wyze publishes IP65 for the Cam v4 — but Wyze also notes the v4 needs a separately sold outdoor power adapter for outdoor use. Read the power section before you assume the cable in the box is weatherproof.
4. What happens in a blackout
A plug-in camera is off when the outlet is off. A battery camera keeps running — but if the router is also down, it has nobody to tell. The camera that behaves best is a battery camera recording to local storage: the eufyCam S330 to its HomeBase, the Reolink to its card. They keep capturing clips through the outage and show them to you afterwards. Cloud-only cameras, wired or not, save nothing until the internet is back. 5. The maintenance you sign up for
A plug-in camera’s maintenance is a memory card. A battery camera’s is charging, and the makers’ own figures vary enormously. Blink publishes up to two years on two AA lithium cells for the Outdoor 4 with default settings — the longest stated figure here, on a 1080p camera with no local recording unless you add a sync module. eufy publishes 365 days of basic battery life for the S330 and says two hours of daily direct sunlight on its built-in panel extends that to “near-infinite.” Reolink publishes a 21.6Wh battery for the Argus PT Ultra with the honest caveat that life “varies based on settings, usage & temperature,” and offers a solar panel. Ring and Arlo publish no month figure for the Outdoor Cam or the Pro 6th Gen at all, so we do not give you one.
Two rules of thumb from those numbers. Solar changes the category: a battery camera on a sunny wall with a panel is, in practice, a wireless camera you never touch. And a battery camera in a busy spot — a sidewalk, a street with traffic — will fall far short of any published figure, because every wake-up costs charge.

The camera for each side of the line
If you can reach an outlet, the plug-in camera to buy is the Tapo C120: 2K QHD, a starlight sensor with full-color night vision, 850nm and 940nm infrared rated to 30 feet, an IP66 rating and a microSD slot up to 512GB that records continuously with no plan. If you cannot, the battery camera to buy is the eufyCam S330 kit: 4K, radar-plus-PIR detection, an integrated solar panel and a HomeBase that stores everything with no fee — eufy publishes 16GB built in, expandable to 16TB. What most homes actually end up with
A mix, and deliberately. One plug-in camera at the entrance that matters most, recording continuously to a card, and battery cameras at the places a cable cannot reach, recording clips to storage you own. That combination costs nothing per month, keeps working through an internet outage, and puts the always-on camera where the whole story is worth having. Frequently asked questions
Are wired or wireless security cameras better?
Neither is better; they do different jobs. A wired (plug-in) camera never needs charging, can record continuously to a memory card, and detects motion by watching the image rather than sensing heat, so it can sit behind glass. A wireless (battery) camera goes anywhere with no cable run, installs in minutes and, with solar, may never need touching — but it records clips rather than a stream and wakes on a heat sensor that misses things at range and through windows. Most homes want one wired camera at the main entrance and battery cameras everywhere a cable is impractical.
What does 'wireless' actually mean on a security camera?
Two things, and listings blur them. Almost every consumer camera is wireless in the sense of using Wi-Fi rather than a network cable — the Tapo C120, a plug-in camera, is 'wireless' by that definition. The meaningful distinction is power: a 'wire-free' or battery camera has no cable at all, while a 'wired' camera in home-camera terms usually means plugged into a wall outlet, not hardwired into the house. When a listing says wireless, check the power section of the spec sheet.
Do wireless security cameras need to be charged?
Yes, unless a solar panel keeps up. Blink publishes up to two years on two AA lithium batteries for the Outdoor 4 with default settings; eufy publishes 365 days of basic battery life for the eufyCam S330 and says two hours of daily direct sunlight on its integrated panel extends that to 'near-infinite.' Ring and Arlo do not publish a battery life in months for the Outdoor Cam or the Pro 6th Gen. Busy scenes, cold weather and frequent live viewing all shorten whatever the maker states.
Do wired cameras work in a power cut?
No — a plug-in camera is off when the outlet is off, unless it is on a UPS. A battery camera keeps running, but if the router is also down it cannot send you alerts; a battery camera recording to local storage, like the eufyCam S330 to its HomeBase or the Reolink Argus PT Ultra to its card, keeps saving clips it can show you later. Cloud-only cameras stop saving anything when the internet goes.
Can a wired camera be used outdoors?
Yes, if it is rated for it and you can get power to it. The Tapo C120 is rated IP66 and the Wyze Cam v4 IP65; Wyze notes the v4 needs a separately sold outdoor power adapter for outdoor use. The practical limit is the cable: an outlet under an eave or a drilled hole with a weatherproof pass-through. Where that is not possible, the battery camera wins by default.
Are wired cameras cheaper to run?
Usually, because the cheapest cameras that record to a memory card with no plan are plug-in models — the Tapo C120 and Wyze Cam v4 are the two we recommend most, and both cost less than most battery cameras up front. Battery cameras that avoid a fee, like the eufyCam S330 and Reolink Argus PT Ultra, cost more up front but nothing monthly. Battery cameras that need a plan, like Ring's and Arlo's, are the most expensive to own over any period longer than a few months.
